The Great Series Review
Synopsis: A young Catherine the Great comes to Russia to get married to Peter III of Russia but finds herself embroiled in a world of dogmatic beliefs and customs, which she tries to alter.
Initial Thoughts: Hulu stole my heart away with this amazing show. The writing, the visuals, the great comedic timing, the acting, the characters storyline, god; the characters and their dynamic with one another. What isn't there to love about this show?
The show started off with Catherine moving to Russia to marry the emperor, Peter III. She had so many expectations of what he would be like and what her marriage to the emperor of Russia would be like. Her expectations were soon shattered after meeting the arrogant, narcissistic, self centered, cruel b*stard who had no regard for human life and had absolutely no idea what love was. What? Did mommy not hug you as a little boy? No, in fact, she did not. The kind of "love" and behaviour he exudes as an adult were what was shown to him as a child. So can you really blame him? Yeah, but that was all he has known.
Catherine soon realizes the women and children of Russia were not educated, they didn't even have a school. She built a school, that was later burnt down by her husband who said, and I quote, "women are for seeding, not for reading." This aggravates Catherine. This and a series of other events forces her into understanding that Peter was not a good ruler and Russia needed change. That's how the coup to overthrow Peter begun. She made a lot of friends, enemies, allies along the way and the first season was a masterpiece. And goodness, the finale was just, *chef kiss*.
At first I hated the idea of Peter and Catherine in season 1, though I did not like her other love interest. I didn't think Peter was a good fit for Catherine until his metamorphosis. I wouldn't want to spoil the show any further, but the show will make you fall in love with Peter and Catherine, but will keep you rooting for her.
Final Thoughts: The second season was way more interesting than the first one and my love for Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult's characters kept me so intrigued. The way the characters are written, it makes you understand why they do what they do. I'm waiting for the third season but I did not like the finale of the second season.
Conclusions: I'd rate it a 7.4/10
